Suriname II: De zuil van Ruben Kogeldans

De ontvangst bij Mohari Broadcasting is hartelijk. We worden omhelsd door Gitana en Harold, die eerder dit jaar op bezoek waren in Venlo. Elke dag wandelden ze van het hotel in de binnenstad naar het gebouw van de omroep in Venlo-Zuid. Aan het einde van de week werden de opvallende Surinaamse gasten herkend en aangesproken. Wat voor Harold en Gitana gold in Venlo, geldt dubbel en dwars voor ons in Totness. Blanken zijn hier zeldzaam en de gemeenschap is klein: in heel Coronie wonen ongeveer drieduizend mensen.
Als we binnenkomen is Harold bezig met het klaarstomen van jeugdig talent. Een 14-jarig meisje werkt aan haar voice-overs. Door jongeren bij Mohari te betrekken hoopt Harold hun leeftijdsgenoten te bereiken. Bovendien is nieuwe aanwas bittere noodzaak. Het afgelopen jaar is het radiostation een aantal vrijwillige krachten kwijtgeraakt. Ze vertrokken naar de grote stad: Paramaribo of Nickerie. Het is het verhaal van een dunbevolkt en snel vergrijzend district. De mensen snakken naar kansen.

Eerder in Paramaribo. De taxi stopt voor rood licht. Op het kruispunt schuifelt een oude man langzaam van auto naar auto. Hij vraagt om geld. Als hij bij ons in de buurt komt doet de taxichauffeur het raampje aan de passagierskant dicht. 'Die verdient meer dan wij', zegt hij. Ik twijfel hardop. 'Zeker weten. Hij staat daar de hele dag.' 'Zijn er veel mensen die iets geven?', vraag ik. 'Genoeg. De laatste tijd is het wel minder geworden. Het leven is harder. Hoe dat komt? Ik weet het niet. Ik ga niet zeggen dat het aan de president ligt. Het geldt ook niet alleen voor Suriname. Het speelt overal.'
De taxichauffeur brengt ons naar Rusthof, de oude begraafplaats aan de Jaggernath Lachmonstraat. Op de begraafplaats staat een monument ter nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers van de SLM-ramp. Op 7 juni 1989 kwamen bij de vliegramp bij Zanderij 176 mensen om het leven. In het vliegtuig zaten ook de spelers van het Kleurrijk Elftal, Nederlandse profvoetballers van Surinaamse komaf. Een van de spelers kwam uit Venlo: Ruben Kogeldans. De sporthal van zijn oude school Den Hulster draagt sinds vorige maand zijn naam.
Als we bij de begraafplaats aankomen is er niemand. Het hek is dicht maar van buiten eenvoudig te openen. Rond de graven zwerven wat honden. Het monument is niet te missen. Vier grote zuilen met bovenop elke zuil de beplating van een vliegtuigmotor. Op plaquettes staan de namen van alle slachtoffers. De naam Ruben Kogeldans staat op de meest linkse zuil. We nemen de tijd om het monument te bekijken. De taxichauffeur wacht bij de ingang: 'Ik kan niet naar binnen. Zodra ik begin te lezen moet ik huilen. Ze zijn er niet meer, die mensen, nooit meer.'
Een dag eerder was de dood dichtbij, vertelt hij op de terugweg. 'In het district Commewijne zag ik hoe een bromfietser werd aangereden door een auto. Op slag dood. Geloof me of niet. Kijk morgen maar in de krant.'

I welcome the Naval History Blog. I am a Marine whose acitve duty service encompassed the years from January 1943 to January 1946, holding the rank of 1st Lieutenant at the conclusion of my acitve duty service. I was assigned to duty aboard the USS Portland (CA33) on which I served from April 6, 1944 to the war's end. The Portland participated in 16 actions (7 while I was aboard) for which combat stars were awarded during WWII. I have recollections of my service which may be of interest to others. I hope that there will be an opportunity to pass these on.

Also posthumously dearocted for bravery after the battle between the Stephen Hopkins and the Stier was engine cadet Edwin J. O'Hara a midshipman on detatched duty from the Merchant Marine Academy. O'Hara was helping man the 4 inch gun when a German shell exploded the magazine disabling the rest of the gun crew and wounding O'Hara. While the other personnel were abandoning ship O'Hara loaded and fired five additional rounds before being killed by shrapnel. It is possible he scored some of the hits that sealed the fate of the Stier.
